On the website Issues2000.org the following was listed.

Daniel Akaka is a Hard-Core Liberal. According to the website Issues2000.org

Voted NO on allowing more foreign workers into the US for farm work. (Jul 1998)
Voted NO on visas for skilled workers. (May 1998)
Voted NO on limit welfare for immigrants. (Jun 1997)
Voted NO on reauthorizing the PATRIOT Act. (Dec 2005)
Strongly Favors Abortion is a woman's right

Ed Case’s votes on the issues
Voted YES on making the PATRIOT Act permanent
Strongly Favors Abortion is a woman's right
Strongly Favors topic Illegal immigrants earn citizenship
YES on continuing military recruitment on college campuses

Ed Case is a Moderate Liberal Populist. According to the Website Issues2000.org

Commentary by pat;
Well there you have it. They both favor abortion, but Ed Case is in favor of the Patriot Act and Senator Akata is not.Depending on how you feel about your civil rights or those of immigrants you can see they have differing opnions. Senator Akata is not very favorable towards immigrants is he? So, depending on how you feel about the above issues you can make your decsion on who you would vote for on September 23 in Hawaii. I urge anyone reading this to please look at the candidate you are voting for and how they will represent the country to the world. They were from a previous campaign but show clearly how some voters see him as a honest, hardworking, a candidate for the people not for himself.

A few weeks ago I sent a contribution to Ed Case's campaign because I am really impressed with this haole local boy who was born and raised in Hilo. He now lives in Honolulu and has served four terms in the state House of Representatives. Believe me, his experience in the Legislature will be extremely valuable to him as governor. The Legislature and the governor need each other. I recognized this when I worked as a legislative staffer for several sessions.
Pearl Richardson NishimuraKailua

I speak of candidate Ed Case, an honorable -- not opportunistic -- man of action who remains accessible to the people. As a state representative, Case seeks genuine input from the people of his district for the benefit of his legislative successor in his 2002 Legislative Report and Request for Guidance.
Moreover, he offers to meet with anybody in his district on any terms. He also gives out all his phone numbers: legislative office, work office and even his home number. This is in stark contrast to Republican candidate Linda Lingle's absence from gubernatorial candidate forums.
Case -- most honestly of all the candidates -- realizes the imperative need to balance the state budget. If the next governor were to give all government union workers all the money they want without drastically cutting services someone must eventually pay a bloated bill. Our society must either cut costs or raise taxes. Case understands the danger of deficit spending.
As for his legislative errors, Case admits he made a mistake when he addressed the Hawaiian entitlements issue without consulting these people. I assert that was an honorable sin of omission (of consulting Hawaiians for their opinions). I think Ed's heart was, and is, in the right place.
Stuart N. Taba

Commentary by Pat
I don't know of how more accessible you can get than giving out your HOME phone number and cell phone. Ed Case gets out and talks to the people, he listens to the people and he acts in the best interests of the people. Why would you vote for someone who was't willing to do any less for your state? Ed Case runs "talks "with the people who are thinking of voting for him to express his opnions and to ask them what they want done in congress and now the senate. His style of reaching out to the people and his track record of voting should help him over come the political power of Senator Akata in September. It still seems like a David and Goliath race but if Ed Case can gedt more of the little people to see his virtues he can win.

When choosing a candidate for senate one of the main considerations I would take into account right now would be how they stand on the War in Iraq. What their postion on the withdrawl of troops would be would be something I would want to know before I voted.

In an article byBy Derrick DePledgeAdvertiser Government Writer
Iraq may be pivotal for Akaka and Case
Nearly three years after the United States invaded Iraq, U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, who opposed the war, and U.S. Rep. Ed Case, a cautious supporter, still see the conflict through different lenses
Case does not want to change course and believes troops can be withdrawn only after the new Iraqi government and security forces have contained the violence that threatens the country's stability.
"I think we are collectively doing what we must be doing at this point given the reality of Iraq today," the congressman said. "Not what has been. Not what we wish might have been, but what is. That's what it's always been about for me, is reality. Not some fanciful wish list."
But what might otherwise be an interesting policy disagreement between two friendly Democrats could turn into something more now that Akaka and Case are facing each other in the September primary for the U.S. Senate. The liberal Akaka and the more moderate Case mostly agree on Hawai'i issues, so voters likely will have to look to national or foreign policy to find differences, and Iraq could be the most substantial.

Commentry by Pat
Well, if you have a son or daughter there, they will not be coming home anytime soon if Case has any say in the matter. If Senator Akata is more vocal about his stance against the war he might win some more votes. This could cost Case the election, if more troops from Hawaii come home in body bags. Or voters see this as a long, costly ,drawn out poor decsion.

The new hot issue in the news, with demonstrations all over the US is..... Immigration.
Hmm, I wonder how Ed Case feels about it?
Voted NO on reporting illegal aliens who receive hospital treatment.
Vote to pass the bill that would require hospitals to gather and report information on possible illegal aliens before hospitals can be reimbursed for treating them. You may differ on some issues by you want the candidate that best fits your political ideology.
I find it interesting that being a attorney himself Ed Case would vote in favor of limiting attorneys fees in class action law suits and restricting frivolous law suits.
He is pro-choice and I like his stance on environmental issues. If passed, he said, the bill would "provide the maximum level of permanent protection for a magnificent marine system and international treasure, larger even than Australia Great Barrier Reef Marine Protected Area."Case has studied the National Marine Sanctuaries Acts and says it doesn't give enough protection to the NWHI."Shouldn't there be some special places in our marine world, which are in fact true reserves -- truly off-limits, where our marine species can live and thrive in their natural state, without the extractive hand of humankind?" Case asks. For him, there is only one answer: Yes.
*The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered species with fewer than 1,500 existing in the world today. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands provide foraging and breeding areas for them. - James Watt/Noaa

Comments by Pat

I know there is a war in Iraq, the country is nervous about gas prices and we live in a guarded state of fear of if and when the next terrorism attack may take place. But I am glad there are congressmen who will care about the environment and the monk seal. This is an environmental issue that congressmen case has chosen to focus on and I think it is an important one to the people of Hawaii and the world. Think globally, act locally. The issue here is also local fishermen would be restricted so he is once again willing to go against popular opinion to do what is right.

What is he really about?

In researching articles about Ed Case I was trying to find quotes from the congressmen on where he stood on issues. Assuming he hasn't changed his mind on these issues he had the following to say in an article published 2/23/2005

By Dan Boylan

Working from two-and-a-half legal pad pages of notes, Case himself speaks to three issues.
“I see the federal budget as our biggest problem,” he says. “How can we afford to do all these things? The federal budget is in the worst shape it’s been in a generation. We have the largest debt in the nation’s history, and it’s going up at the fastest rate in our history.”
Then he turns to foreign policy. Case mentions two young Hawaii servicemen recently killed in Iraq, one of whom graduated from Waianae High School.
“How do we finish in Iraq and leave?” Case asks. “I don’t want to debate whether we should have gone into Iraq or not. That debate’s worthwhile, but we have to deal with the problem we helped create.
“Iraq has to be stabilized. The Iraqis must have a government of their choosing. And the Iraqi people must provide their own security. It’s impossible to have a timetable for that. There’s no perfect choice in Iraq.”
Social Security also concerns Case:
“We’re polarized on the issue. President Bush says Social Security is in crisis. His critics say there’s no problem with Social Security at all. I don’t believe either President Bush or his critics.
“I have concerns. The president wants people to keep part of their Social Security tax money to invest. But Social Security was created to assure a risk-free basic safety net, not as an at-risk investment fund. And there’s the problem of the costs of privatizing. Estimates run between $1 trillion and $2 trillion.”
Midweek cover-2-23-2005
Summary by Pat
I like congressmen Ed Case. He states how he feels in a consice manner and not in a manner of a "politicalisms" that the general public cannot understand. I think he listens to the people ofHawaii, he periodcally goes out to conduct "Talk Sessions" with people to discuss issues and listen to their concerns. I believe if I was a citizen of Hawaii, I would definately be voting for Ed Case. I've read many things I liked about him. Such as he came from a family of means but has earned his way through life. Running for office isn't just a "hobby" for him, he truly cares about the people he represents.

The Akata Bill

More News from an editorial in the Honolulu Star Bulletin
Congress should end delays in Akaka Bill
THE ISSUE
The American Bar Association has endorsed the bill to recognize Hawaiian sovereignty.

The legislation was augured by a 1993 congressional apology for the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom. It was made necessary by a 2000 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that Hawaiians lack tribal status afforded to American Indians and Alaska natives. Sponsored by Senator Akaka, the bill passed the House in 2000 but has languished in the Senate.

Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz., froze the Akaka Bill in recent years with a hold permitted by the Senate's archaic rules. Akaka and Senator Inouye retaliated in 2004 with a threat to a measure sponsored by Kyl. Republican leaders agreed to send the Akaka Bill to the floor by last August, postponed it for a month and laid it aside while addressing Hurricane Katrina.
Akaka said nearly two months ago that Majority Leader Bill Frist pledged "on taking appropriate steps" to assure a Senate vote this year.
Challenged for re-election by Rep. Ed Case, Akaka claims the seniority and relationships "to move things in the Senate," but his influence has yet to bring the legislation most dear to him to the Senate floor. Case fully supports the Akaka Bill, but the effectiveness of Akaka's seniority is at issue, as it should be.

Commentary by Pat:
perhaps more editorials like this will shed light on the posibility that Senator Akata is ineffective in getting his own bill passed. This will give an extra boost to Congressmen Ed Case's campaign for sure.

Congressmen Ed Cases offers help
in a notice from congressmen Ed Case

Native Hawaiians to Benefit from $9.5 Million in Federal AssistanceApplications Being Accepted Now Through March 24, 2006By Congressman Ed Case, 1/23/2006 10:28:17 PM
The U.S. Department of Education is accepting grant applications through the Native Hawaiian Education Program, established by Sen. Daniel Inouye, today through March 24, 2006, and I'm urging organizations involved in the education of Native Hawaiians to consider this opportunity. The grant awards, which will total $9.5 million, will range from $375,000 to $1.1 million.
I commend the department for increasing its outreach efforts by working closely with the Native Hawaiian Education Council and the Native Hawaiian community. I am also confident that USDOE will build upon its success of last year by reaching out to more Native Hawaiian communities in the near future, and I am particularly pleased that it has allowed more time for applicants to prepare for this year's awards process.
In past years, not enough organizations in areas of my district with large numbers of Native Hawaiians -- particularly on the Waianae Coast and Molokai -- had been aware of these grants. Last year, I worked with the U.S. Department of Education and the Native Hawaiian Education Council in conducting targeted outreach efforts by sponsoring workshops that helped Native Hawaiian groups apply for these grants. In total, $14.5 million was subsequently awarded to 29 various organizations and programs last year, including schools and groups that received federal funds from this program for the first time in my 2nd Congressional District.

Comments by Pat
The congressmens opponent for Senate the incumbent Senator Akata has the "Akata Bill"which is written to help right the wrongs done to native Hawaiians throughout history. This may be the congressmans way of reaching out to native Hawaiians with financial help. Ed Case has said he supports the Akata bill. Which I'm not sure has a chanced of passing since it would open the door for other such legsliation. Such as reparations for descendants of former slaves. This grant money to help fund education is going in the right direction, without having to pass difficult legsliation.

From an Editorial by John Webster

In an editorial by John Webster, director of Chaminade University's Hogan Entrepreneurs, a program that prepares students for entrepreneurial careers in business, government and non-profit organizations

Serving in Washington is all about the power to make things happen

"As is well known, Sen. Daniel Inouye is the co-chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee and the ranking Democrat on the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. Akaka is the ranking member of the Senate Committee of Veteran Affairs and ranking member of three other subcommittees including the important Readiness and Management Support Subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Power in Washington is tied to these important assignments, and our Senate delegation wields great power that is important to Hawaii. The importance attached to this seniority-based power is seen in Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's reported request to Case that he not run.
So, let's keep this important issue of seniority and its practical value in mind as we judge who is best qualified to represent the state of Hawaii. If we choose to remove from office one of these powerful gentlemen, let it be with eyes open and with the conviction that the hoped-for, long-term merits outweigh the sacrifice of immediate strength.
For those who argue simply that Hawaii's Senate power will wane sometime anyway, as either of our senators resigns or dies, it would be well to remember that power, like money, is never more valuable than it is right now.

Comments by Pat
Mr. Webster makes a good point. But how can one get on committees and gain power and experience if one is not elected senator? Both Mr. Akata and Mr. Inouye are in their 80's, Ed Case is 53 and could serve many more years and build a new "dynasty". There's that old "resigns or dies" phrase again.

Campaign Cash

Akaka also apparently has a fundraising advantage over Case. It has tended to stifle it and hold them back because we have been micro-managers and control freaks," Case complained.

He further states...
"It is obvious to me that I am responsible for that next generation of leadership. It is a no-brainer as how I should serve Hawaii," Case said.
Both men were asked if they would appear together in a debate and Case said yes, while Akaka would not commit.
"I think voters are entitled to compare us," Case said.

On whether to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildilfe refuge...
Case: "We shouldn't drill in a wildlife refuge. We set it aside because it was incredibly vital not just to Alaska or our country, but to the world. You have to protect the few remaining special places in the world."
Akaka: "I am an environmentalist, but this is an issue I differ with them, because my vote is for the indigenous people of Alaska. They asked me to help them. They said one way they could get resources and improvements to their quality of life was to drill for oil. The moment they come to me and say they don't want it, I am out

Commentary by Pat
Ed Case isn't afraid to critise the democratic party or admit he would vote against his party on issues he is clearly not afraid to take a stand on. Senator Akaka by his own admission states I'll do what they want now but if they change their minds later I'll change mine also. Way to take a stand on such an important issue as the Actic National Wildlife Senator Akaka. Leads me to believe you just don't understand what being an "environmentalist" is.
As far as a debate perhaps if Ed Cases followers grow in numbers Senator Akaka will be willing to meet face to face, but for now Ed Case can only challenge Senator Akaka in the media.
I think Ed Case in coming out and critizing the Democratic party is shooting himself in the foot. Either he knows they will never support or endorse him, or he feels he can win without them.
Comments like 'It is obvious to me that I am responsible for that next generation of leadership. It is a no- brainer as to how I should serve Hawaii." tend to turn people off. It makes him sound too self assured. I'd rather hear more about where he stands on important issues such as Artic oil drilling. If he wants to win he needs to win friends in and out of the democratic party.

Challenging The "Old Guard"

From an article in the Hawaii Reporter

Bucking the Old BoysEd Case Says Chance Em, Makes a Run for Congress Despite Threats from Some of Hawaii's Most Senior PoliticiansBy Malia Zimmerman, 1/20/2006 11:01:10 PM
.
Protocol in Hawaii's dominant political party dictates a Democrat incumbent would not challenge a fellow Democrat with more seniority because it could result in the party icing out the challenger and ending his political career. The Democrat old guard, which has controlled politics in the state for more than 40 years, would do its best to ensure this very real threat is realized.

Abiding by proper protocol, Case would wait for Akaka to retire or die and then he"d seek the blessing of Inouye, who is considered the party's godfather. But that can take decades -- Akaka was in the U.S. House from 1976 to 1990 before he made a bid for the Senate and he only vied for the Senate after the much-loved U.S. Senator Sparky Matsunaga died in office. Case followed the same tradition running in a special election in 2003 to replace U.S. Rep. Patsy "Pink" Mink who died in office just before the November 2002 election.

"I am motivated by giving voters a choice. Do voters want to be forced to accept a candidate that was pre-selected for them or break the mold and have a choice in the next election?" Case asks.
The old guard in the Hawaii Democratic Party is already gunning for Case. They say he is disrespectful, that he should wait his turn, that he should get in line and do what he is told, that he'll never win, and that he will ruin his career.

Comments by Pat
Wow, I thought the Democrats in Chicago were controlling! To me it sounds as if they are talking to a little child "Go back to your room (congress) you are not ready to take over Grandpa's store (senate)." How dare you challenge your elders! We control things around here mister. You know you must wait for the incumbent to retire or die this is how we have always done things and we are not about to change for a young whipper snapper like you.
I think the voters will have a say in this matter. For now I say give the kid a chance, the old guard may chew him up and spit him out, but it will make for an interesting campaign.Let's see how the Democratic "Old Guard" Hawaians roast a challenger.
